In this seminar, participants will be introduced to the basic principles of speculative design and the potential of AI as a creative catalyst. Using a combination of AI tools (ChatGPT, Dall-E, Midjourney, Dream, etc.) we will collaboratively develop speculative scenarios, exploring the challenges posed to human activities by the expected future conditions of external environments. We will begin by framing possible future problems and draw inspiration from existing solutions. In the conceptualisation phase, we will continue with an iterative process to develop and validate ideas for product concepts, which will be discussed and evaluated. We will adopt an exploratory and experimental approach, focusing on the use of AI tools during the design process. The seminar will end with short presentations of the proposed solutions and a general discussion.

Materials: ideally, participants should bring their own laptops.

Organisers:

Hande Ayanoglu is a design professor and researcher. Her research involvement spans areas such as Product Design, Interaction Design, Emotional Design, Human-Robot Interaction, and Health and Well-being.

Eduardo Gonçalves is a design professor and researcher, focusing his main interests on Sustainability, Industrial and Lighting Design, Design for Behaviour Change, Human Centred Design, Environmental Psychology, Analogue and Digital Modelling and Prototyping, and Statistics applied to Design.

Filipa Alves is a biophysicist and design researcher, currently working on nature-inspired algorithms for generative design and on design approaches to improve scientific literacy.
